Overview
An acute disease characterized by diarrhea containing blood or mucus,
due to any of a number of microbial infections.
Signs and Symptoms
- Acute onset.
- Abdominal pain.
- Tenesmus (rectal spasm and false urge to stool).
- Diarrhea containing blood and/or mucus.
- Fever.
Etiology
Numerous pathogens are possible, including:
- Shigella dysenteriae
- Campylobacter
- Salmonella typhi
- Escherichia coli O157:H7
- Yersinia pseudotuberculosis
- Yersinia enterocolitica
- Balantidium coli
- Viruses such as rotavirus, Norwalk virus, coronavirus, adenovirus.
- Parasites such as Entamoebia histolytica.
